AZ Alkmaar 23-24 Special Kit Released - Celebrates Dutch Victory Over Spain 450 Years Ago
Alkmaar, the city in the North Holland province, is celebrating its 450th anniversary of defeating the Spanish army with a special Victory shirt. AZ, the local football club, released a limited-edition (450 pieces) purple shirt that represents the Siege of Alkmaar in 1573.
The Siege of Alkmaar in 1573 marked the beginning of the Dutch's victory against the Spanish army. The Alkmaarers refused to surrender and fought fiercely against the Spanish army trying to breach their city walls. They threw boiling tar and breached the dykes until the Spanish soldiers dropped out on 8 October. This historic victory is still celebrated every year on 8 October, and the Victory shirt is a tribute to the bravery of the men, women, and children of Alkmaar.
