Manchester United to Sign £70 Million Sponsorship Deal to Replace Chevrolet?
It's been known for a while that Manchester United will have to find a new main sponsor to replace Chevrolet after after 7 years with the club.
Originally up at the end of the current 2020-21 season, the club took advantage of a contract clause that allowed them to extend the Chevrolet deal for another six months, until 31 December 2021. This means that the new Manchester United main sponsor is set to make its debut at the start of 2022.
A few days ago, The Sun reported that Manchester United are in talks with a number of interested companies, including a "mystery US software firm". An earlier version of the article stated that said software company was the "front-runner".
Talks are ongoing by the paper speculates that a deal could be close, in part because Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward told investors last week that the club were confident of "bouncing back strongly from the pandemic".
What's interesting is that the article initially mentioned a figure of £70 million both in the title and intro of the article - any mentions of the number have since been removed however.
The article also mentions that the value of the deal with Chevrolet deal, which was initially £64 million a year, was reduced for the extra six month.
Verdict: We think that the current rumors are not concrete enough to expect an official announcement soon. The fact that the £70 million figure was removed from the article after publication also makes everything less believable.
Fans will have to wait for a while to find out who will replace Chevrolet for the second half of the 21-22 season. As mentioned in our previous article, it's also possible that the Manchester United shirt will initially be sponsor-free from 1 January 2022, if no suitable sponsor is found until then.
