The Russia 2014 World Cup kits were not created in a few hours were a result of a deep research that took place in Moscow and St Petersburg during 2012.
The Russia 2014 World Cup home kit was not hand drawn but was made using a 3D model of the famous Kosmonauts Museum in Moscow.
Meanwhile, the Russia 2014 World Cup away kit, which showcases the earth from the pace, was designed using pictures from the Russian space satellite ‘Electro-L’.

Russia 2014 World Cup Kits - 3D Designed jerseys - 2014
- This Russia football kits @adidasfootball were the result of a deep research that took place in Moscow and St Petersburg during 2012.
- We visited the Kosmonauts Museum in Moscow @mmkspace , the main museum dedicated to all Russians that made possible one of the biggest communal achievements of the country.
- A 3D model of the museum was recreated and used as main graphic in the Home jersey. This is the same shape of the memorial somewhere in Siberia, where 27 years old Yuri Gagarin landed after his heroic first round to Planet Earth.
- The Blue tones of the away jersey were inspired by the tones of the space suits used at that time. But the most important inspiration comes from the description that Yuri gave from Earth, when he
got to be the very first human to see the our planet from space. “I enjoyed the rich color spectrum of the earth. It is surrounded by a light blue aureole that gradually darkens, becoming turquiose, dark blue, violet, and finally coal black.”
- The Earth Scientific Monitoring Center took part in the developing process of the kit and delivered unique pictures of Earth, taken from the Russian space satellite ‘Electro-L’, to adidas.
The outline of the Earth was modified and placed on the jersey, now it looks like a light blue semicircle. This image shows same perspective from which Yuri Gagarin (the first man in space) saw his motherland from space in 1961.
- The flag is positioned in the arm, as it was in the original spacesuits. There is a writing in the back neck area that originally was going to say Поехали! (Let’s Go!) that was the phrase that Yuri said just before taking of, and then became a legendary local saying.
Wearing the kits in the 2014 World Cup, Russia did not progress behind the group stage and did also not win a single game. This might be one reason why the designs are not iconic today.
