Behind the Puma Kit Designs - What Do They Mean? Dortmund, Marseille, Valencia and More

  • Puma Kit Design Approach: Puma put significant thought into their 2019-20 kits, despite using a basic template for most designs.
  • Stadium Inspiration: Many Puma kits, including Dortmund, Chivas, and Marseille Away, are inspired by the architecture and imagery of their respective teams' stadiums.
  • Other Inspirations: Some kits draw inspiration from different sources, such as Valencia's third kit being based on a classic shirt, Gladbach's home kit inspired by fan smoke, and Marseille's third kit inspired by the MuCEM.

Despite the rather basic template that's used for almost all of them and ultimately drags them down a fair bit, Puma put a lot of thought into its 2019-20 kits.

The resourceful guys over at @LaCasacaBlog created a fantastic list compiling the most interesting inspirations behind various Puma 19-20 kits in a Twitter thread all the way back in July - let's take a look at some of the most interesting ones.

Dortmund - Inspired by Stadium

The Dortmund Cup jersey features a graphic on the upper body and sleeves that is closely based on the roof structure of the Signal-Iduna Park.

Valencia - Inspired by Classic Shirt

Valencia's third kit is based on a classic Puma Valencia shirt, the 90-91 away.

Chivas - Stadium

The Chivas away graphic incorporates a number of aerial shots of the club's stadium.

Marseille Away - Stadium

Marseille's away shirt comes with an all-over graphic print that derives from the roof of the Stade Vélodrome.

Gladbach - Fans

The graphic on the Gladbach home shirt is based on the smoke generated by the club's supporters.

Marseille Third

Marseille's third kit pays homage to the facade of the MuCEM, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations.
