The Unsung Heroes of Kit Culture: Appreciating Wikipedia's Pixel Kit Artists

  • Wikipedia Kit Editors: Wikipedia kit editors are a dedicated group of football fans who volunteer their time to update team pages with the latest kit designs.
  • Open-Source Updates: The fast and accurate kit updates on Wikipedia are due to passionate fans, as anyone can edit and fix outdated kits on team pages because Wikipedia is open-source.
  • Pixel Kit Template: Wikipedia kit graphics are created using a decades-old Football Kit template with layers for different kit elements, used on approximately 53,000 pages.

With the massive wave of new 2026 international kits officially released and making their on-pitch debuts, kit nerds everywhere are analyzing every single detail of the new designs. But while we focus on the high-res promotional images and authentic materials, another incredibly dedicated subset of the football community has been hard at work: Wikipedia kit editors.

Recently, a tweet by journalist Ella Brockway went viral, praising the blazing speed at which the USMNT Wikipedia page was updated to reflect their brand-new 2026 Nike home and away kits. She also noted how surprisingly great the intricate designs looked, even in their standard, heavily pixelated Wikipedia format.

Shortly after, other users chimed in. Those 2026 national team kits released in the past few weeks have been recreated on Wikipedia already.

Who Updates the Kits on Wikipedia?

Brockway's tweet raised a common question: "I'm not sure who is in charge of updating the kit designs on the Wikipedia pages..."

The beautiful answer? Nobody, and everybody.

As any seasoned Wikipedia editor will tell you, there is no official "department" in charge of updating football team pages. Because Wikipedia is entirely open-source, the incredible speed and accuracy of these kit updates are purely the result of passionate football fans and kit enthusiasts volunteering their free time.

If you notice a team is wearing an outdated kit on their page, you can actually go right ahead and fix it yourself!

The Art of the Pixel Kit

The Wikipedia kit graphics are made using a decades-old Football Kit template, which consists of different layers for the different elements of the kit (sleeves, body, shorts, and socks). The template is used on approximately 53,000 pages on Wikipedia - incredible!

So, the next time you browse a club or national team's Wikipedia page and see a perfectly recreated pixel version of their newest shirt, take a second to appreciate the anonymous kit nerd who spent their afternoon making it happen.

Have you ever tried your hand at editing and creating a pixelated football shirt for a Wikipedia page? Are you impressed by how quickly these get updated? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
