FIFA Opens Door for Special & Next Season's Kits at 2025 Club World Cup - But Keeps Strict Sponsor Rules
- Kit Flexibility: Teams can register special edition, next season's, or other unique kits for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
- Sponsor Restrictions: Sponsorship advertising must be identical to what appears on the team's kits in domestic or continental competitions, preventing new sponsors or modifications for the tournament.
- Color Contrast Requirements: Teams must register at least two contrasting kit colors (one dark, one light), while goalkeepers must have three colors that differ from outfield players.
In a notable development for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, teams will have the freedom to register special edition kits for the tournament, while maintaining strict adherence to sponsorship regulations.
According to FIFA's Club World Cup regulations, teams must still follow the fundamental color contrast requirements, with each club required to register "a minimum of two different and contrasting colors" - one predominantly dark and one predominantly light. However, teams can register any kits - this season's, next season's, special editions, anniversary versions, or unique tournament variants.
Meanwhile, the sponsorship rules are stricter. Article 12 of FIFA's regulations explicitly states that any sponsor advertising must be identical to what appears on the team's kits in at least one of their domestic or continental competitions during the same season (or, where applicable, in the season just completed or
just beginning). This means while clubs can introduce special designs, they cannot add new sponsors or modify existing sponsorship arrangements for the tournament.
Teams are not allowed to change kits and sponsors during the tournament - we expect that all/most teams will use their 24-25 season sponsors, even if a deal runs out in the middle of the tournament (many sponsor deals usually run until 30 June, which is in the mid of the all-new Club World Cup).
This regulation effectively means that Real Madrid could use next season's 25-26 kit, and Palmeiras can use its special-edition kits, while they must maintain their regular season sponsors without any tournament-specific additions or modifications.
For goalkeepers, the rules stipulate three contrasting colors that must differ from both the outfield players' kits, ensuring clear distinction during matches regardless of any special designs.
Will Bayern and Chelsea use next season's home kits? For Bayern, we strongly think so
