Should the Premier League Introduce Club-Specific Colored Sleeve Badges?
- Current Design Problems: The standard navy Premier League sleeve badge clashes with many team kit colors and disrupts overall kit aesthetics.
- Proposed Solution: Introducing custom-colored sleeve badges to match each club's kit, as demonstrated through mockup examples.
- Implementation Challenges: Implementing custom badges would significantly complicate things for the league, its teams, and its badge supplier due to production and potential stock issues.
The Premier League's sleeve badge has been a consistent element of club kits since its introduction. However, MLS's fantastic sleeve badge update with Apple TV has made us thinking whether the league should consider club-specific colored variations of the badge to better integrate with team kits.
What we dream of 😊
Current Design Challenges
The standard navy blue Premier League badge presents several design conflicts:
1 - Color Clashes
- Creates visual discord with bright kit colors (e.g., Manchester United's goalkeeper kit in green)
- Particularly noticeable on red kits, such as Liverpool's and Manchester United's red home kits
- Bad contrast with dark kits, e.g. the black Arsenal 24-25 away kit
2 - Brand Integration
- The current badge can disrupt the carefully planned aesthetic of club kits
- Modern kit designs often feature intricate color schemes that the navy badge fails to complement
- The "No Room For Racism" text beneath adds another layer of design complexity
Potential Solution: Custom-Colored Badges
We have created several mockup examples that demonstrate how color-matched badges could enhance kit aesthetics:
Liverpool Kit Example
- Red badge with yellow border seamlessly integrates with the home kit
- Maintains visibility while respecting the overall design
- Preserves the iconic lion logo while adapting to club colors
Manchester United Goalkeeper Kit
- Yellow/gold badge integration with green kit shows how dramatic color differences can be handled
- Proves the concept works even with non-traditional kit colors
Arsenal Away
- Green & red badge seamlessly integrates with the away kit
- Offers better contrast than the actual design
MLS is caring a lot when it comes to sleeve badges - all other leagues not at all
Precedent in Other Leagues
Two major leagues already implement flexible badge designs:
- Bundesliga: Adapts badge colors for certain special occasions
- MLS: Every team gets a custom badge for every kit
The visual evidence suggests that custom-colored Premier League badges could significantly enhance kit aesthetics while maintaining the league's brand identity.
The miscolored sleeve badges are a thing in almost every league. For example, La Liga has a striking red badge.
Custom badges would significantly complicate things for the league
Implementing custom badges would significantly complicate things for the league, its teams, and its badge supplier, Avery Dennison. You could not as simply mass produce them, and teams might fight with leftover stock. MLS puts the badges on every authentic kit already during production, avoiding this.
