Official: Lamine Yamal Switches to Number 19 - Old Messi Number

FC Barcelona today announced the new shirt number of youth sensation Lamine Yamal, and it is a historic one.

Messi wore the number 19 from 2005 until 2008, when he got the number 10 shirt

Lamine Yamal Gets Number 19 for 24-25 Season

Last season, Lamine Yamal wore the number 27 shirt for Barcelona. However, Lamine needed to get a new shirt number for the 2024-2025 season, as first-team players (which Lamine Yamal now is) are only allowed to wear a number between 1-25.

First team players need to wear 1-25

Lamine Yamal will wear the number 19 for Barcelona next season. It's a fitting number for the Spaniard. He wore number 19 for Spain at the Euros, whilst a young Lionel Messi also wore the shirt for Barcelona from 2005 until 2008.

The club also considered giving Yamal the prestigious number 10 shirt but ultimately decided against it and for the number 19. Why? The Barcelona number 10 shirt is owned by Ansu Fati, who spent the 23-24 season on loan at Brighton, leaving it vacant. Now that Ansu Fati has returned to Barcelona, we strongly expect that Fati gets his number 10 back if he stays at the club.

Aside from the Yamal number, there will be a few other shirt number changes in the 24-25 season.

  • No. 2 is vacant following the end of Joao Cancelo's loan spell. If Barcelona re-sign Joao Cancelo, he will continue to wear number 2. Otherwise, it is likely to go to Julian Araujo or Hector Fort.
  • Marc Casado could wear number 20 if Sergi Roberto does not get a new contract.
  • Mika Faye, another reserve who is close to breaking into the first team, could wear the vacant number 12.
  • Vitor Roque will get a new shirt number, as he wore the number 19 in 23-24
