The decision to refresh the badge comes as part of the club's efforts to celebrate its rich history and engage with its passionate fanbase. Middlesbrough FC, founded in 1876, holds a significant place in football history as one of the oldest clubs in the world. The forthcoming 2026-27 season marks a monumental occasion in the club's journey, and the introduction of a new crest is seen as a fitting tribute.

Acknowledging the importance of the crest to supporters, the club has expressed its commitment to involving fans in the design process.

Lee Fryett, Boro’s chief commercial officer, expressed the club's enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Any crest that is adopted must represent that proud history and what the club means to our supporters, as well as our vision for the future."
