No More Select - Liga Portugal Puma Orbita Ball Released

Update: The 2023-24 Liga Portugal Puma ball has been released. It features the trademark green and purple combination of the Portuguese Football Professional Leagues.

The ball will be used on the Primeira Liga (1st tier), Segunda Liga (2nd tier) and Taça Da Liga (League Cup).

The Liga Portugal ORBITA ball is composed of a unique configuration of 12 large star-shaped panels, a reduced number of seams and state-of-the-art technology, to create a sphere that maintains its shape and allows for less water absorption.

A foam technology increases sensitivity, providing a firmer touch and greater consistency. In addition, the 1.2 mm textured 3D surface improves aerodynamics and makes the ball more resistant to abrasion and wear, resulting in greater durability.

Original (Jun 10): Liga Portugal, the governing body of professional football in Portugal, confirmed yesterday the long-term partnership with German sportswear brand Puma.

Puma replaces current Primeira Liga ball supplier Select, who had been making the league's Official Match Ball since 2019-20.

After La Liga and Serie A, the German sports brand will be the Official Sponsor and guarantee the official ball of professional competitions for the coming seasons. This comes at a time when Puma wants to improve its involvement in the Portuguese market and already has two sponsored teams, on the brink of a third and with a National Team partnership on the horizon.

PUMA and Liga Portugal signed a long-term Sponsorship and Licensing Agreement. The sports equipment brand will be the Official Match Ball of Primeira Liga (1st tier), Segunda Liga (2nd tier), and Allianz Cup (League Cup) and the Official Technical Sponsor from 2023/24.

However, the agreement foresees a much more comprehensive collaboration, also agreeing to involve cooperation in marketing projects, events, and brand activations, always with a focus on creating value for the fan.

After La Liga in Spain and Serie A in Italy, PUMA reinforces its strategy of focusing on the major European Leagues, contributing to the brand's growth in football territory worldwide. The parties made official the agreement reached some time ago, at a ceremony at Liga Portugal's headquarters attended by Pedro Proença, President of Liga Portugal, and Javier Ortega, General Manager of PUMA for Southern Europe.

The Portuguese League has had now three ball manufacturers in the space of a decade. Let's hope Puma can deliver great quality products while maintaining a high degree of personalization.

“It is with great satisfaction that we start this partnership with Liga Portugal. After La Liga and Serie A, we are very excited to see the new PUMA Orbita ball also in action on Portuguese pitches and we hope it will help deliver spectacular moments and performances at the highest level”, commented Javier Ortega, PUMA Managing Director for the south of Europe.
