Coca Cola Return as Tokyo Verdy Shirt Sponsor
Coca Cola will return as the shirt sponsor of Tokyo Verdy Beleza who play in Japan's WE League.
Coca Cola Sponsor Tokyo Verdy Beleza
Tokyo Verdy's Mizuno shirts from the early to mid-90s are hugely popular and a part of the shirt's cult status is due to the cursive Coca Cola text on the front. Their 93-95 home shirt in particular, with its green shades and sunburst effect, is finished off perfectly by one of - if not the single - most recognisable brand logos in the world.
The unchanged logo will appear once again on the green Athleta shirts of the Tokyo club, this time sponsoring their women's team for the 22-23 season, Tokyo Verdy Beleza, who wear the same shirts as the men's side. The men's jerseys will continue to bear the Nicigas logo.
In the 80s and 90s the drinks company sponsored a host of teams, especially in South and Central America, their timeless logo a perfect match for the aesthetic of the era. Although they have maintained partnerships with FIFA and other football associations and clubs since then, they have pulled back on shirt sponsorship, their last appearance as main sponsor coming on Bolivar's 2008 home shirt. They did however remain visible as one of a number a secondary sponsor on a range of Mexican team's shirts until around the mid 2010s.
All we need now is for Mizuno to sign a deal with Tokyo Verdy Beleza and release a set of remakes of those 94 classics. Are there any other retro sponsors you would like to see make a comeback? Comment below.
