Nike Venezia Prototype Kit Designs Revealed - Why Venezia Left Nike For Kappa

The Kappa Venezia 2021-2022 kits are possibly the most popular kits of the 21-22 season. Now the designer of the kits, Diego Moscosoni, has given some insights into the design process of the kits in an interview with Urban Pitch. With it, we also get a look at several discarded Nike designs.

Diego Moscosoni is the co-founder of Fly Nowhere, the agency that designed the Kappa Venezia 21-22 kits.

As described by Diego Moscosoni, there have been several reasons that lead Venezia not to renew with Nike but to sign with Kappa.

Nike are geared for much bigger, much more template-based operations

The main problem with Nike was that the US giant and the small Italian club just didn't fit together. Nike would be "geared for much bigger, much more template-based operations". They would only do unique creative things for the biggest clubs like Inter and PSG, due to their bigness and bureaucracy.

"With the tiny clubs like Venezia, it’s essentially a template program. It’s not really even Nike doing much at all. We attempted to offer some compromises, but their system just doesn’t have the room for that. It’s mainly because there’s not enough time."

Diego Moscosoni also highlights that the entire process for designing, prototyping, etc for the Venezia Kappa kits took just 60 days - it takes at least 12 months for the big brands.

Venezia had a bulk of unsold old Nike kits in their warehouse

What is interesting is that he says that Venezia would still have got "jerseys from Nike from 2017, 2018, 2019, sitting in the warehouse that we couldn’t sell. We couldn’t sell Nike’s minimum quantity".

What is unique to Venezia are the crests and other things - those were supplied by a third company.

"Kappa is super fast, although they don’t build the whole complete thing. The silicone badges and all of the other bells and whistles that you notice, the Venezia ones are better than the other Kappa ones. That has to do with us going a little further with using our own supplier for the embellishments, numbers, all that kind of stuff."

The breaking point was that Nike would Venezia not give more than two kits, but they wanted more.

Venezia got hardly bespoke kits from Nike

Venezia's Nike prototype kits show off a range of teamwear-base designs with custom graphics but certainly not a single kit designed in Nike's HQ.
