Closer Look: Mizuno's Outrageous J League Kits During the 90s
The biggest retailer of classic football shirts (@classicshirts) recently shared four great pictures compiling some of the greatest J League jerseys during the 90s. These 12 football kits underline how unique and experimental Mizuno's football shirts really were during that era.
The J.League is Japan's professional football league and was founded back in 1992, 29 years ago. Since then, football in Japan has become more popular and it is finally a professional league after Japan's highest division previously consisted of amateur clubs.
The 10 founding clubs were Gamba Osaka, JEF United Ichihara, Nagoya Grampus, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Urawa Red Diamonds, Verdy Kawasaki, Yokohama Flügels (dissolved), Yokohama Marinos, Kashima Antlers and Shimizu S-Pulse.
Regarding the football shirts itself, it is very interesting to see that a lot of the J League 1990s kits come without a sponsor logo on the chest but instead feature a short writing alluding to the club itself such as 'CRZ Osaka', 'Bellmare' or 'Antlers'.
Additionally, every single J League 1990s football shirt on show features a unique graphic print making every jersey a unique piece of art.
