CR7's Record Broken? Will PSG Refinance The Messi Deal with Kit Sales Alone?
Yesterday, we reported that it is almost impossible to get an official PSG Messi shirt. Now an incredible figure is doing the rounds on social media.
Messi Paris Saint-Germain - Number of Shirt Sales
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, PSG has already sold 832,000 jerseys in the first 24 hours of his arrival. This would surpass Cristiano Ronaldo's record 520,000 Juve shirts shirt sales when the Portuguese joined Juventus in 2018.
Messi would have surpassed CR7's Juventus 24h shirt sales
However, we were not able to find the original Marca source for the shirt sales. So, even though the sum of shirt sales seems to be plausible, we are not sure it is correct (it seems almost impossible to count the number of shirt sales across all channels in the first days).
Can PSG refinance the Messi deal through shirt sales alone?
If 832,000 Messi PSG jerseys would have been sold, it would be bringing in around 100 million euros in revenue (calculated with the price of the PSG replica with Messi printing).
Messi earns a net salary of 40 million Euro per season
It depends on many things of how much PSG will keep as profit from these sales, but we believe it could be up to 20%, or around 20 Euro/shirt. We calculate that PSG could have earned between 10 and 20 million euros with Messi shirt sale in the first 24 hours alone.

But in the first 24 hours of his arrival, the club has already sold 832,000 jerseys, bringing in ~$105 million in revenue.
The club keeps around 10%, so that's $10.5 million in profit on the first day.

Messi will be paid an annual net salary of 40 million euros at PSG. This means the club has already refinanced an important part of his salary with jersey sales in the first 24 hours alone.
The Messi deal could get much more expensive for PSG thanks to bonuses in the future
However, the deal could get much more expensive for PSG. Marca reports that Messi will get two bonuses. One - worth 115 million euros - would come if he renews his contract, and the second would be a loyalty bonus of 78 million euros.
