Full AFC Ajax Logo History & Meaning - 21-22 Home Kit To Feature Old Crest?
Update: It was leaked that the Ajax 21-22 home kit could feature an old club crest. We decided to put up our article about the logo history of Ajax that we originally created for the club's 120 birthday. It is not certain which old crest the Ajax 21-22 home kit will feature (or if it will feature it at all, that is also not 100% sure yet).
Ajax was founded on the 18th of March 1900 by three friends as. Football Club Ajax. The club was later renamed to Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax or Ajax for short.
The origin of the name Ajax is pretty simple. It is derived from the Greek Aias (alas). The name is borne in Greek mythology by two Greeks renowned for their valor and prowess. Ajax Telamon was a strong and brave warrior who led the Greeks in the Trojan War after Achilles withdrew.
Ajax's first kit, in 1900, was black
Ajax Logo History
Ajax just had four different logos in their history so far, less than many other famous clubs.
1900-1911
In 1900, when the club was founded, the emblem of Ajax was just a picture of an Ajax player. At the time, the club's kit was red, black and white, the colors of the Amsterdam flag.
1911-1928
When Ajax gained access to the first division of the national championship in 1911, the club was forced to change their colors, as Sparta Rotterdam used exactly the same combination. The new kit did not yet exist and, according to the league regulations, the younger clubs should change their colors if other teams in the league already used them. So Ajax opted for a white shirt, with a vertical purple stripe, and white shorts. Consequently, the shield also had to be changed.
1928-1990
In 1928, the club logo was introduced with the head of the Greek hero Ajax.
1990-today
In 1990, Ajax changed their logo into an abstract version of the previous one. The old logo was, due to its complex lines, very difficult to be exploited commercially
The current Ajax logo still sports the portrait of Ajax, but drawn with just 11 lines, symbolizing the 11 players of a football team.
