REVEALED: Adidas Ocean Plastic Not Actually From Oceans
Four years ago, Adidas announced a partnership with Parley for the Oceans. In order to protect the oceans and one of its biggest problems, the plastic in it, Adidas announced that they would start to produce shoes and other gear from recycled ocean plastic to protect the oceans. Adidas announced in 2016 that it would place on the market, in 2017, 1 million pairs of sneakers made with Parley for the Oceans recycled ocean plastic. In 2019, Adidas plans to make 11 million pairs of sneakers with recycled ocean plastic.
“With Adidas products made from recycled plastic, we offer our consumers real added value beyond the look, functionality and quality of the product, because every shoe is a small contribution to the preservation of our oceans,” Adidas executive board member Eric Liedtke said in a statement. “After 1 million pairs of shoes produced in 2017, five million in 2018, we plan to produce 11 million pairs of shoes containing recycled ocean plastic in 2019.”
Greenwashing With "Ocean Plastic" - Companies Like Adidas Do Not Produce From Actual Ocean Plastic
The revelation that Adidas is not producing from actual ocean plastic has been made by German TV Channel ARD, who made investigations into the Greenwashing of companies with 'Ocean Plastic'.
ARD asked experts who are researching how to process ocean plastic. Gilian Gerke, a German professor into ocean plastic and its processing, revealed what are the reasons for Adidas and other companies for not making products from ocean plastic - it would be just not economically as it is too expensive.
A simple product like a shoehorn would cost around 200 Euro currently, according to Gilian Gerke. This is as much as Adidas' Parley boots.
Adidas said ARD: "The plastic trash originates from beaches and coastal regions and has been recycled before getting into the oceans".
