BVB From Next Season - Here Is Why & Which Bundesliga Teams Have The Team Name On The Top
Some days ago, we reported that German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund is set to change the positioning of the player and team name on the kits from the 2019-2020 season (team name from bottom to top, player name to bottom). Dortmund is by far not the only Bundesliga team whose kits will feature the team name on the top - we give an overview of which teams have the same style.
Which Bundesliga Teams Have Team Name Printed On Top & Bottom
The reason for most Bundesliga teams to have the team name printed on the top is symbolic - the 'team stands above the player (or the players are changing, the clubs stays)'.
Bayern Munich was the initiator of having the team name above the numbers - their long-term president Uli Hoeneß was one of the first to say that the team should always stand above the player. Their kits featured the names on the bottom since the custom kits were introduced in the Bundesliga in the 1995-96 season.
In total, 13 Bundesliga have the team name on the top, while only 5 have them on the bottom (Bremen, Gladbach, Hoffenheim, Mainz, Nürnberg). Below is an overview of all 18 current Bundesliga teams.

In most other leagues, teams only have the player name on their kits. In international competitions, it is only allowed to have the player name on the top (Bayern's kits feature no team name in the Champions League, for example).
