The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to be opened this summer.
The stadium, which will have a retractable roof unlike any other, opening up like a flower and inspired by the Oculus in the Pantheon of ancient Rome, is one of the most expensive stadiums ever built at projected costs of $1.5 billion.
According to Atlanta United FC General Manager Jim Smith, the design had soccer in mind from the very beginning, pointing to the retracting lower bowl seats to widen the field, and mechanized curtains that limit the capacity to about 40,000 from 71,000.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to host Super Bowl LIII in 2019. It is scheduled to open on July 30, 2017 with an Atlanta United FC home match against Orlando City SC.
