Total income from kit sponsorship has risen by 20%
In the six European league monitored in the 2014-15 European Jersey Sponsorship report (Premier League, Primera Division, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Eredivisie) income from jersey sponsorship rose over 20% from last season (from €570m to over €687m).
English Premier League has seen a 36% rise in income on the previous season, driven largely by Chevrolet’s deal with Manchester United, worth at least €54m per year. La Liga (+30%), Serie A (+21%), Ligue 1 (13%) and Bundesliga (+9%) have also seen a rise in kit deal income, while Dutch Eredivisie's income from shirt sponsorship dropped by 5%.
Foreign investment is fuelling the rise in football shirt sponsorship revenue. Qatar and UAE based companies spent approximately €160m this season, while UAE is also the biggest single shirt sponsorship investor.
German based companies, who spent €112m across the continent’s top leagues are followed closely by US based companies with approximately €82m, driven by Chevrolet’s Manchester United sponsorship deal.
Glenn Lovett, president of global strategy, Repucom, said: "The rise in foreign money in European football is nothing new however investment in shirt sponsorship is increasing more rapidly than ever. With investment in 2014/15 growing 20% over last season, the investment in shirt sponsorship has increased faster than at any time in the last 15 years."
