Group Stage Complete: Nike Continues to Dominate 2018 World Cup Boot Goalscoring Charts
With the group stage complete and 48 of 64 games played, we decided to take another look at which boots are the most prolific ones at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Similar to when we checked last time, Nike heavily dominates affairs, with the Mercurial Vapor taking the top spot ahead of Superfly and Hypervenom. It's to be expected with more than 63% of players at the cup wearing Nike but still remarkable.
2018 World Cup Group Stage - Top Goalscoring Boots and Brands
Courtesy of Football Boots DB data (check out the full ranking here), the Nike Mercurial Vapor is by far the most successful boot in terms of goalscoring at the 2018 World Cup. Its tally stands at 33 goals, more than double that of the number 2, the Nike Mercurial Superfly (13 goals). Following are the Nike Hypervenom Phantom III (low cut), Adidas X 18+, Adidas Predator 18.1 and Puma ONE 1.
If we add up goals scored by all different models from the Mercurial boot family, we get 47 goals scored. For comparison, at the 2014 World Cup, all Mercurial boots combined scored 36 goals in total, with the Adidas F50 Adizero line winning with 48 goals. Yes, the Mercurial has almost equaled the tally of the previous champion with just three quarters of games played.
Looking at brands a similar picture is painted. Nike leads the list with a whopping 67 goals scored, ahead of Adidas with 27 and Puma with 7. All other brands play supporting roles at best, with only Mizuno, New Balance and Asics managing more than a single goal each. Despite being the fifth most popular brand with 6 players, Umbro boots have so far not registered a single goal. The same applies for Lotto, but the Italians only have 2 sponsored players.
